Poethig received her B.A. in 1980 from the University of California at Santa Cruz and her M.F.A. in 1992 from Mills College. She is on the faculty of the Visual and Public Art Institute of California State University Monterey Bay and is Artistic Director of Inner City Public Art Projects for Youth. She has won numerous awards, including a 1994 Bay Area Master Muralist Award. In her collaborations with DIWA she performs the role of General Douglas MacArthur.
